Essay on "Artificial Intelligence"

  • Introduction

Artificial intelligence, AI, is a novel technology that has attracted a lot of interest among researchers for writemyessay requests. Researchers are making incredible gains and claims for this newfound technology. Government agencies and industrial organizations are spending millions of dollars to acquire this technology. There are multiple gains made from AI; in manufacturing, in communications, in mineral exploration, in space exploration, in medical diagnostics, and in almost every arena of human endeavor. Artificial intelligence can, in principle, do almost all that the human mind does. However, questions arise on whether AI can ever take the place of the human mind.

A Comparison of Artificial Intelligence and the Human Mind

Artificial intelligence is a computer science field that explores computational models of solving problems, where the problems solved are complexities of problems solved by the human mind. Artificial intelligence is an entity that has the power to discriminate between right and wrong actions or between rational and irrational actions. The mind is described as a repository of feelings and thoughts. From these definitions, the mind functions based on feelings and emotions. Instincts drive these feelings. If the human mind would do something at the spur of a moment, then mistakes might be committed. However, from these definitions, intelligence has the power of discrimination and making rational decisions. Therefore, the human mind and artificial intelligence share a similarity of having some level of knowledge. However, a significant difference between AI and the human mind arises in the aspect of consciousness. Consciousness is an entity beyond AI and the human mind. The key aim of researchers is to design AI systems that can think like humans and act like humans while philosophers float the possibility of intelligent machines that can assist in defining what it means being human. However, limitations arise in designing AI systems that are conscious like the human mind. Artificial intelligence works using laws of logic. The fact that Artificial Intelligence associates itself with logic does not guarantee that all decisions taken by AI systems are always right. If initial assumptions made by an AI system happen to be wrong, then all conclusions would be wrong. However, the human mind has conscious that assists it in making decisions out of experience. This makes the human mind more superior to AI. This is because AI does not act on consciousness and experience, but purely on logic. Artificial intelligence systems are also limited to take a place of the human being by lacking creativity and originality. For instance, the output of any AI system is the result of its program, physical structure, and the input it is given. On the other hand, the human mind makes creative and novel actions. Human beings are the ones who create AI systems. Human beings can be argued to have creativity and not machines. Therefore, the human mind stands out from an AI system.

No matter how hard researchers try to design AI systems that can completely mimic the human mind, perhaps, consciousness will always remain transcendental to human intelligence. The very source of logic is consciousness itself. Therefore, AI may never take a place of the human mind. Still, research in AI systems has its significance. These systems will continue assisting human beings in solving many practical problems.
